Coalition Against Mayor de Blasio’s Plans for New Jails Targets His Presidential Bid

Mayor de Blasio has no place running as a progressive presidential candidate while pushing a “regressive” plan for new jails, according to a new coalition hell-bent on squashing Hizzoner’s White House ambitions.


Community advocates will launch the “Boroughs United” campaign Thursday arguing that de Blasio should focus on investing in criminal justice reforms instead of building four new small jails to eventually replace the troubled Rikers Island complex.


“It would be an absolutely travesty if he was able to continue running on that progressive platform when in reality, it is not,” said Nancy Kong, who’s spearheading the coalition. “Democrats in states like Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina are considering him – they need to know that his plans are actually regressive.”
