ISSUES WE WORK ON
Environmental Justice
The South Bronx has long been a target for environmental racism. Decades of poor planning have led to the concentration of polluting facilities, highways, and warehouses in our community. This has severely impacted air quality, leading to high rates of asthma, heart disease, and other illnesses.
Public Health Equity
In the South Bronx, poverty, pollution, and lack of access to quality healthcare create a cycle of inequity. Life expectancy here is four years shorter than in other parts of NYC.
South Bronx Unite works to improve public health by reducing pollution, expanding healthcare, and supporting local resources like green spaces.
Community-Focused Development
For decades, development in the South Bronx has concentrated pollution while disregarding local residents.
South Bronx Unite advocates for development led by the community, for the community.
Green Space Equity
The South Bronx suffers from a lack of green space, with industrial sites dominating the waterfront and only one park serving 90,000.
South Bronx Unite is committed to expanding green space access to improve residents' physical and mental health.
Arts & Cultural Equity
The South Bronx has been a key hub for iconic cultural movements like hip-hop, salsa, mambo, muralism street art, and post-graffiti. Yet today, few spaces remain for local artists to thrive.
South Bronx Unite is committed to preserving and uplifting local arts by connecting land and culture.
