The Challenge

In Mott Haven-Port Morris, approximately 1 in 4 children are diagnosed with asthma

The South Bronx experiences PM2.5 levels that are often double the EPA's recommended limits

Mott Haven and Port Morris has 1 small park for 60,000 residents

The South Bronx sees more respiratory-related hospitalizations and ER visits due to air pollution than other parts of NYC

In the South Bronx, the challenge of poor air quality is pervasive and deeply rooted in decades of systemic inequities. Historically, our community has borne the disproportionate burden of industrial facilities and transportation infrastructure, leading to high levels of pollution and detrimental impacts on public health.

Residents, particularly those in neighborhoods like Mott Haven and Port Morris, face heightened risks of respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and other health complications due to prolonged exposure to pollutants.

The absence of green spaces further compounds the problem, depriving our community of essential natural buffers against pollution and exacerbating the impact of extreme heat temperatures.

Low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately affected, facing environmental hazards that exacerbate existing health disparities. For too long, the South Bronx has been marginalized, with residents paying a steep price for environmental degradation with their health and well-being.

Clean air is not just a luxury; it's a fundamental right for every community, including ours. We stand united in our commitment to fight for breathable air and environmental justice in the South Bronx.

  • Through strategic deployment of air quality sensors throughout the South Bronx, we are quantifying pollution levels and identifying sources of contamination. This data-driven approach enables us to advocate for targeted solutions and raise awareness about the health impacts of poor air quality.

  • By promoting the transition to electric vehicles and advocating for sustainable transportation policies, we are reducing emissions from fossil fuel-powered vehicles, a significant contributor to air pollution in our community.

  • Congestion pricing, a proposed plan by the MTA, seeks to impose fees on vehicles entering designated zones during peak hours. South Bronx Unite vehemently opposes the seven scenarios proposed by the MTA, as outlined in our public statement. We believe it unfairly burdens already marginalized communities and fails to address the root causes of traffic congestion and pollution in the South Bronx.

  • Green infrastructure is crucial in mitigating the impacts of poor air quality and enhancing community well-being. By fostering the creation of parks, community gardens, and community-led initiatives, like our Waterfront Plan, we aim to provide residents with natural buffers against pollution.

  • In response to the increasing frequency of extreme heat events exacerbated by climate change, we are implementing measures to enhance community resilience and protect vulnerable populations from heat-related health risks.

  • Acknowledging the significance of indoor environments in shaping health outcomes, we are implementing initiatives to monitor and address pollutants within homes and workplaces. This includes providing air purifiers to help residents mitigate indoor air pollution and create healthier living spaces.

Our Response
