Congress Member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a town hall meeting on the progress of the Green New Deal on Thursday evening, February 22, at PS171Q in Astoria.
The Congresswoman discussed her first piece of legislation, the Green New Deal. “Like President Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Green New Deal would create millions of jobs preparing our country for the impacts of climate change and transitioning our national energy grid to renewable sources. Thanks in part to her advocacy, last year, the federal government made its biggest ever investment in climate change – $369 billion to fight climate change, 9 million green jobs and net zero carbon emissions by 2030,” according to her web page www.ocasio- cortez.house.gov/legislation/climate.
At the outset, her presentation was loudly interrupted by a man who claimed he is challenging her for her seat in Congress on the Republican and Conservative lines. He and an associate were quickly escorted out of the building.
