The city's Industrial Development Agency has approved giving a $100 million subsidy to food retailer Fresh Direct for their new headquarters in the Bronx.
Critics such as City Comptroller John Liu have questioned the decision. He said subsidies to a private company cannot be justified when the money could be used to pay teachers or underwrite student scholarships.
Fresh Direct said it would spend more than $112 million to build the headquarters and that the project will create some 1,000 new jobs.
