End-of-Summer Waterfront BBQ!

Another powerful event this year as we continue reclaiming the waterfront! We had the best time bringing our community back to #ourwaterfront this month for an end-of-summer BBQ next to the Lincoln Ave Street End, one of the few direct access points to the our peninsula's waterfront. Seeing kids' smiles, parents taking pictures of the river, people relaxing and enjoying the music were priceless and a powerful reminder of the urgency to advance the community-envisioned Mott Haven - Port Morris WaterFront Plan Thanks to all community members who joined and to A House on Beekman, Korean Art Forum and NYC DSA for contributing to the success of this event.
Bronx Food and Farm Tours

The Bronx Food and Farm bus/bike tour of Mott Haven and Port Morris was a great success thanks to everyone who joined us. Your enthusiasm was crucial as we explored how local community gardens foster healing, education, and resilience against toxic industries.
South Bronx Waterfront Community Envision Sessions

Thank you to all community members who participated in our Waterfront Community Envision sessions. Your invaluable feedback will directly support our $20 million EPA Community Change Grant application. We gained valuable insights on how to activate two key locations on the Mott Haven-Port Morris Waterfront: the southern end of Lincoln Ave and the eastern end of E 132nd St., which will be crucial in preparing a strong application to bring these sites to life.
Earth Day Celebration & Art Installation

On April 27th, we celebrated Earth Day with community members and local artist Leslie Lopez, gathering at the southern end of Lincoln Ave to reclaim a difficult-to-access public space. This event showcased a community-designed art installation, reflecting our neighborhood's creativity and commitment to an equitable waterfront.

Honoring the Life of Dr. Mutulu Shakur & HEArts Community Center Celebration

Dr. Mutulu Shakur, an acupuncture pioneer at the former People’s Detox Center, was commemorated for his legacy by having his friends and comrades share testimonials. Community members also shared their collective vision of transforming an abandoned city-owned building into a thriving community-managed hub with an emphasis on (H)ealth,(E)ducation, and the (A)rts / HEArts.
Climate Week: Air Quality Monitor Launch

Due to the siting of polluting facilities in Mott Haven and Port Morris, the South Bronx has to bear the cumulative health impacts of poor air quality. In an effort to attain cleaner air, SBU, Quant AQ, and Columbia University organized a neighborhood tour that identified the locations where our air quality monitoring devices will be installed.
City of Water Day

In collaboration with Randall’s Park Alliance and El Barrio Bikes, we celebrated City of Water Day with a bike tour from East Harlem through Randall's Island to the South Bronx to support our community-led initiative to establish green spaces along the waterfront.
Earth Day Environmental Justice Bike Tour of the South Bronx Waterfront

We toured the Mott Haven/Port Morris waterfront to show our community some of the polluting infrastructure that ravages our community with a range of illnesses, including asthma, cognitive impairment, obesity, and heart disease. We brought attention to our community solutions to address this injustice, including our campaigns for more open green space (our Waterfront Plan) and for a community hub focused on Health, Education, and the Arts (HEArts Center).
Green Our City Now Forum

South Bronx Unite, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, and the New York League of Conservation Voters convened members of the City Council and environmental justice organizations to remedy the negative cumulative impacts of unjust policies that have plagued low income and communities of color for decades by influencing council members sign on to the Green Pact.
Toxic Waste Tour

The South Bronx and Northern Manhattan have disproportionate concentrations of polluting facilities that negatively impact low-income communities of color. SBU and We Act facilitated a tour of both impacted regions was provided to organizations, state agencies, and legislators to expose the injustices our communities face as well as demonstrate solutions to injustices through existing and forthcoming projects.

The Boogie Down Fall Festival

The family-friendly event welcomed everyone to participate in a teach-in on the Climate, Jobs, and Justice Package, a NYS legislation package that advances climate and environmental justice.
Little Amal Searches for South Bronx Waterfront

An arts festival highlighting the need for public land for public good. The festival featured various participatory art-making activities followed by a procession to the waterfront with Little Amal, which highlighted our inaccessibility to our waterfront.
HEArts for the People!

After ten years of demanding public land for public benefit and envisioning the possibilities for the abandoned and dilapidated Lincoln Detox Center, we have pushed the city to release an RFP/application for the building! The city held a visioning session for the center, and the community unified to ensure our message to the city was clear: HEArts for the people!
City of Water Day

The Harlem River runs right past Mott-Haven-Port Morris. Yet, we have no access to it. As other parts of NYC get more waterfront parks, we are forgotten. We say NO MORE! We demand access to our waterfront. City of Water Day was an opportunity to learn about out the current injustice and how South Bronx Unite will mitigate the issue through our waterfront plan.
